There *is* no best brand of formula. For this reason, an international agreement (the World Health Organization Code on the Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes) states that countries should enact laws forbidding manufacturers to make such a claim.

Where one brand of formula might have fats that are more similar to human milk (the *normal* food for babies), another may have proteins that are better. And a third has better carbohydrates. Since *all* of these are vital to an infant’s proper development, none of the formulas are “best” or “closest to mother’s milk”.

Further, the vitamin and mineral content *must* be different in infant formulas than in human milk. Human milk is a baby’s natural food, and is nearly 100% digestible. This is not right of infant formulas. So, they need to add extra vitamins and minerals to compensate for those that are lost in the digestion, or babies would be malnourished. For instance, human milk has iron in a very absorbable form; 50-70% is absorbed. Only 10% of iron in formula is available to the baby.

And human milk contains live cells, some of which protect a baby from diseases that the mother or baby have been exposed to. In fact, the breast can produce antibodies to bacteria or viruses that the mother *doesn’t* have immunity to herself following exposure at an earlier feeding.

    Yes, I am back for a 3rd round … LoL …

So far luvmadukes has given the best answer to this question … I’d say the exact same thing :

Breastmilk is always best, but, if that is not doable, (even with a breast-pump), then I would suggest Enfamil LIPIL. It has the same levels of DHA / ARA (17mg and 34mg per 100 calories, respectively … ) as are found in human breastmilk. DHA/ARA help promote BRAIN and EYE developemnt. It is LOADED with vitamins and even rare minerals, such as copper,

(Copper aids in the development of your baby’s heart, skeletal system and nervous system. It helps build connective tissue, form red blood cells, and even combat free radicals that can endanger healthy cells.

Whole grains and legumes contain copper, as do nuts and seeds. Protein sources such as liver and kidneys, chicken, fish, and lean meat, also will supply you with copper.)

magnesium, and phosphorus that you don’t usually find in ‘everything else’ … Then again, Enfamil LIPIL ISN’T everything else … Our daughter is ‘on the way’ (She’s half-done; LoL …), but whenever she is borne, if we can’t brest-feed, our second choice is LIPIL. I’m going to try to find a website on it, and if I can’t I’ll try to scan the mark and place it on a website for you, and send you a link when I answer one of your other questions …

That depends on your baby and/or hospital. Some babies need a special kind of formula for certain things. My first baby was on Similac w/Iron and I never had a problem with it. My second but spit up EVERY single formula that is made. She started losing weight because she couldn’t keep any of it down. I had to place her on goats milk. Some babies might have a deficiency of something that different formulas can provide for them. Honestly…I would say goat milk is the best alternative to your own breast milk. It has everything the baby needs plus some. It’s rich and filling. But you might want to place the baby on some kind of vitamin also. I have seen many healthy babies raised on goats milk.

There is a Soybean base formula, I my self would say it is simpler to digest and better for the baby.
